Brazil: full of Beach munching piranha, mysterious animals and ZOMBIES!

Brazil.

It’s a wonderful, beautiful place with erotic locals, amazing sights and pristine beaches…

Full of piranhas.

Wait–What?!

[via Brietbart]Authorities in a state in Brazil’s northeast are scrambling to take the fright and the bite off the beach after piranhas sunk their teeth into about 100 beachgoers, UOL Noticias reported.

The problem — rather fearsome given piranhas’ horror-movie teeth and ability to sink them into human flesh — has been the biggest at the main beach area in Piaui state; authorities said they need to act fast to reduce a piranha overpopulation situation.

Last weekend, at least 100 bathers were treated at the hospital in Jose de Freitas not far from Terezina, Piaui’s capital, after being bitten on the heels or toes at the local beach.

“Since they have no predators, piranhas have started attacking people on the beach,” said Romildo Mafra, a local environment official. [Read More]

This is one of the few photos ever taken of the giant armadillo, a five feet long behemoth that lives a nocturnal, solitary life in isolated wetlands of central Brazil. You can probably see why these things are so rare.

Twice as big as your average armadillo, the giant species likes to live in the undisturbed forests of central Brazil, remaining in underground burrows for most of the day. Their behavior patterns keep them far away from the gaze of humans, which means that they’re one of the least well understood animals on the planet, particularly for something of this size.

The photo up top is the result of a camera trap set up recently in South America’s Pantanal region, one of the world’s biggest areas of pristine wetlands. It took ten weeks and several camera traps built by researchers from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to get this photo and a handful of others, underscoring the immense difficulty of studying these reclusive creatures.

While we know what the giant armadillo looks like, that’s practically all we know about them for certain. We don’t even know for sure what they eat, although their claws do seem well-suited for digging up termite mounds, presumably to eat what’s inside. It also appears that they can’t do one of the most famous armadillo tricks – they’re too large to roll into a ball to escape predators, which is why they burrow.

Brazil has those as well.

[via Stylist] A woman was pronounced dead and sent to a hospital morgue in Brazil – despite being alive and breathing at the time.

In a scenario that could have come straight from a horror movie, Rosa Celestrino de Assis, who is in her 60s and suffering from pneumonia, was wrongly pronounced dead by an attending doctor.

According to Brazilian daily newspaper O Globo, Rosa was sent to the morgue and spent at least two hours in a body bag.

The blunder was only uncovered after her daughter came to see her and say goodbye.

“I went to give my mum one last hug, and I could feel that she was breathing. I screamed out – my mum is alive! And they all looked at me like I was crazy,” Rosangela Celestrino told the paper.

“Not only did I have to go collect my mum from a cold storage drawer at the morgue, but when I got there, I find her still breathing.”

Hospital officials at the unnamed institution said Rosa was pronounced dead at around 7.30pm on Friday after failing to show any vital signs.

They added that the mistake was uncovered at 10pm, at which point Rosa was immediately intubated and put back on life support. [Read More]

Scratching Brazil off my “Bucket List” of places to go before I die.

If I’m already dead however…

Completely different matter.

But if I’m dead, or if I want to be dead due to crazy mysterious wildlife (who unbeknownst to modern science, wants to eat my face off..What, they don’t know – Hello, “mysterious”!), or beach munchie-like Piranha?

Definitely the place to visit!

But I’m betting all that is not in the brochure.

4 May--I found that my landlord had got a letter from the Count, directing him to secure the best place on the coach for me; but on making inquiries as to details he seemed somewhat reticent, and pretended that he could not understand my German.

This could not be true, because up to then he had understood it perfectly; at least, he answered my questions exactly as if he did.

He and his wife, the old lady who had received me, looked at each other in a frightened sort of way. He mumbled out that the money had been sent in a letter, and that was all he knew. When I asked him if he knew Count Dracula, and could tell me anything of his castle, both he and his wife crossed themselves, and, saying that they knew nothing at all, simply refused to speak further. It was so near the time of starting that I had no time to ask anyone else, for it was all very mysterious and not by any means comforting.

Just before I was leaving, the old lady came up to my room and said in a hysterical way: "Must you go? Oh! Young Herr, must you go?" She was in such an excited state that she seemed to have lost her grip of what German she knew, and mixed it all up with some other language which I did not know at all. I was just able to follow her by asking many questions. When I told her that I must go at once, and that I was engaged on important business, she asked again:

"Do you know what day it is?" I answered that it was the fourth of May. She shook her head as she said again:

"Oh, yes! I know that! I know that, but do you know what day it is?"

On my saying that I did not understand, she went on:

"It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that to-night, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?" She was in such evident distress that I tried to comfort her, but without effect. Finally, she went down on her knees and implored me not to go; at least to wait a day or two before starting.

It was all very ridiculous but I did not feel comfortable. However, there was business to be done, and I could allow nothing to interfere with it.

I tried to raise her up, and said, as gravely as I could, that I thanked her, but my duty was imperative, and that I must go.

She then rose and dried her eyes, and taking a crucifix from her neck offered it to me.

I did not know what to do, for, as an English Churchman, I have been taught to regard such things as in some measure idolatrous, and yet it seemed so ungracious to refuse an old lady meaning so well and in such a state of mind.

She saw, I suppose, the doubt in my face, for she put the rosary round my neck and said, "For your mother's sake," and went out of the room.

I am writing up this part of the diary whilst I am waiting for the coach, which is, of course, late; and the crucifix is still round my neck.

Whether it is the old lady's fear, or the many ghostly traditions of this place, or the crucifix itself, I do not know, but I am not feeling nearly as easy in my mind as usual.
