When it comes to things that are ‘evil’…
Sodas?
Not the first thing that pops into my mind.
(NaturalNews) Have a Coke and a smile. Or, if you’re part of the ‘new generation,’ a Pepsi. One taste of those excito-toxins and you won’t worry about aborted fetal cells or cancer-causing chemicals. After all, who wants to think about Type 2 Diabetes when they just want a sweet reward, and a moment to relax?
But that’s the worst kind of evil, isn’t it? The sneaky, insidious kind? The kind you have to be ever vigilant about lest it permeate itself into the collective consciousness. You may be thinking, ‘Seriously? We’re going there with soda?!’ The answer is, yes. At least one leading biologist has come out and explained why we should avoid soda, and all fizzy drinks.
What happens when you drink soda
The highly addictive nature of the sweeteners used in soda means it functions like a gateway drug. Spikes the blood sugar, unbalances the digestive flora, grows the yeast which then demands more and more and more. The side effects of Candida overgrowth can be very disruptive and wreak havoc on moods and relationships, as well as health. The carbonation (carbonated water, phosphoric acid) means the drink is very acidic, which causes your body to leach calcium from your bones to maintain proper blood pH. It takes around 25 eight ounces glasses of water to neutralize what one 16 ounce soda does to your blood pH. That’s a double whamy for teeth – sugar to eat at the enamel, and calcium robbed as well. Small amounts of caffeine won’t hurt you, but there are much better, healthier, and more natural sources of caffeine. Who knows what’s in the secret flavor recipes, besides more chemicals. If you go for diet, the aspartame is even more dangerous. It’s a neurotoxin with 92 known side effects to your health, and it is 180 times sweeter than cane sugar. And one last bit of trash on the ingredient list: the coloring additives. [Read More]
Artificial butter, however?
After I read this next article (below)…
Makes me think it DEFINITELY deserves a slot on that evil list.
[via ScienceBlog]Artificial butter flavoring ingredient linked to key Alzheimer’s disease process
A new study raises concern about chronic exposure of workers in industry to a food flavoring ingredient used to produce the distinctive buttery flavor and aroma of microwave popcorn, margarines, snack foods, candy, baked goods, pet foods and other products. It found evidence that the ingredient, diacetyl (DA), intensifies the damaging effects of an abnormal brain protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The study appears in ACS’ journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.
Robert Vince and colleagues Swati More and Ashish Vartak explain that DA has been the focus of much research recently because it is linked to respiratory and other problems in workers at microwave popcorn and food-flavoring factories. DA gives microwave popcorn its distinctive buttery taste and aroma. DA also forms naturally in fermented beverages such as beer, and gives some chardonnay wines a buttery taste. Vince’s team realized that DA has an architecture similar to a substance that makes beta-amyloid proteins clump together in the brain — clumping being a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. So they tested whether DA also could clump those proteins.
DA did increase the level of beta-amyloid clumping. At real-world occupational exposure levels, DA also enhanced beta-amyloid’s toxic effects on nerve cells growing in the laboratory. Other lab experiments showed that DA easily penetrated the so-called “blood-brain barrier,” which keeps many harmful substances from entering the brain. DA also stopped a protective protein called glyoxalase I from safeguarding nerve cells. “In light of the chronic exposure of industry workers to DA, this study raises the troubling possibility of long-term neurological toxicity mediated by DA,” say the researchers.[Read More]
My love for microwave popcorn just died…
Stupid biologists/nutritionists/scientists.
*pouts*
I hope you are happy with yourself.

Oh, man!
This is so depressing. To feel better I ate some popcorn and drunk the ginger ale.
Then my Candida asked for more.
I know, right? Why is all the good tasting stuff so bad for you? Jeez!
I am trying to cut back, then completely kick my soda habit. But this article was very much right, it IS a tough addiction. Ugh. But I am trying…One sad, sad day at a time.
I know, me too.
One sad, sad day at a time.
Hahaha
We should do it together. Like Soda Anonymous!
Hi…My name is Amber. I am a Diet Dr. Pepper addict.
The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?
Hi… My name is Maria. I am Pepsi addict.
Oh, that felt so good, getting off my chest.
Absolutely. *pops top of Diet Dr. Pepper…guzzles*
So refreshing.
Now at some point we are actually suppose to STOP drinking our addiction. Huh. Any idea when that might be?
Better be soon or our addiction could grew like yeast in our bellies.
We should not and i repeat we shouldn’t encourage each other to continue with this degenerate habit.
Let’s be serious and behave like adults. “laughs”
You are right…
Damnit.
Haha
Yeah, better that then swine flu.
It’s so hot here. And the loudest firework just finished.
How are you?
Why do you have fireworks now? I’m sure I know, but you will have to remind me. Haha
As for me, I am fine. Better than fine actually. Losing weight, feeling great and working out every chance I get (but taking care not to overdue). Thanks to watching what I eat, I have been having less pains stomach wise, which is nice. ABOVE nice. Working out the way that I am, diet and all, I am getting my 6 pack back. Niiiccceee.
So…Feeling good, doing better. All is well with me.
How about you?
Every summer last week of July and first week in August is the Symphony of Fire where 3-4 nations participate in fireworks. Last night was Italy and the whole neighborhood smelled like sulfur. You know, regular summer fun.
I am fine and surprisingly i am doing the same thing as you. Watching what i eat, having less stomach pain, that damn soda! and being active. It’s very hot and summery so I am more out enjoying the weather.
I am good.
Watching the Olympic I saw many 6 packs. I did think of you and your 6 packs. Cause I am sure you have them.
Me, more like a six rolls.
Ah yes…The Symphony of Fire! I remember I envied you that last year, and you being the wonderful friend you are, sent me numerous. I had forgotten all about it, what with my preoccupation of the Olympics and all. So the horrible smells aside, have you seen any good shows this year? Hope so. firework shows at night are always so very magical!
Thrilled to hear you are doing much the same as me. I would, after all, rather hear that you are taking care of yourself, as opposed to worrying yourself sick. Your mom needs you healthy, yes? And oh yeah, if we could BOTH kick our soda habit I think both our stomachs would be so much better for it. On that score? I have had only one at work tonight, as opposed to my normal three. *shrugs* Its progress. Rome wasn’t built in a day, right?
Yes. You did some beautiful posts about the Symphony of Fire. You never know, but maybe one day you will see it in person. It is very magnificent. It is done on the water with thousands of small boats with their lights on in the English bay. Lots of small planes in the air cruising. At lest half a million people watching the fireworks.
The barge is in the water and it is one of the most profound experience. This year it was Vietnam, Brazil and Italy. The Italian show was fantastic.
During your week off I did some soul searching and started being proactive instead of worrying myself sick.
Had a haircut and bought some t shirts. Felt better immediately.
Seriously, I think we should kick our soda habit. Our stomachs will be very grateful for that. And our moods.
I usually have 2 but it is too much of acid for me. Today I had one.
We should seriously support each other in this. This is a bad habit. I will not have soda tomorrow and you have just one. Deal?
My mom is much better.
See, the problem is? My bad habit is MUCH worse than yours. Notice earlier I said I only had one of the three I usually have…AT WORK.
I had like four when I got up today before work. Bad me, I know – I KNOW! I do, its horrible. And I really wish I wasn’t as dependent on them as I am. So, ok…How about this, I will cut back to three at home (instead of four), and I will only have one at work? That play ok with you?
I have to gently ease off the caffeine intake else I will risk MAJOR withdrawal headaches. Then, on the 14th we will do a status check and see if we can ween me off one more from my day, kicking it down to TWO at home and ONE at work.
If I want off, its the only workable process I can see that makes sense. That is unless you have a better idea. Hey, I’m all ears.
And oh, by the way before I forget. My next few work days play like this: I work the next two nights, then I am off work the 8/07 and 8/08. I come back to work Thursday night (8/09), but then I am off for my regularly scheduled weekend off and won’t be back until Tuesday night. In other words? I am FINALLY back on my regular schedule…Thank goodness! *whew*
Wow honey, your bad habit IS much worse that mine. But I think I have more of the stomach pain. “laughs’

I am not so much better than you. I drink two, one after another usually after the main meal.
Four before work is really, really bad and I know you know this.
Why don’t you have 2 at home and 2 at work. It’s better to stretch it and not to risk major headaches.
Then on 14th you can start to have two at home and one at work.
It’s absolutely not good for you to have so much at home. Drink water with some lemon.
Thanks for being honest. I know it’s hard.
We have to help each other with this.
Thanks for the schedule. I wasn’t sure how many nights you work.
Yeah, bad I tell ya. You want some honesty? Hey, I have actually cut BACK at home and I don’t drink as many sodas as I used to.
Which? Probably why I have stomach issues. Its eating the lining of my stomach and small intestines. Yikes. And what you suggested sounds do’able. Hopefully.
I will give it a shot tomorrow and tell you how it goes tomorrow night. But the hard part for me will be meals. ANY meals. I usually drink two sodas when I eat, every time I eat. But I guess now is the time to change that. Ugh. Can I say doing the right thing, the healthy I-will-try-not-to-kill-myself-needlessly thing? Sucks. I’m just saying.
And yes, but I have a feeling YOU will have to help me far more than I am helping you. *sadness*
No prob on the schedule. After I come back to work on Tuesday the 14th, I will work through Thursday the 16th. I will then be off the weekend 17th – 19th, then it will be the start (once again) of my long Hell Week at work. Wanna hear something weird? Its been so long since I had one of those, I kinda miss it. *shrugs* Go figure.
I don’t know what to do to laugh or to cry.
Do you know how I got a major stomach problem? I drunk one summer two years ago iced tea.
Litres of it. That’s how acid ate my stomach lining and small intestines. I thought the pain will go if I drink more of the iced tea.
Yeah, that was me being smart and mature.
It’s scary how we have the same habits but that will help us to kick it.
You drink two sodas when you eat? Seriously? That was me before I did some damages to my stomach. I was bored, drink some soda. I ate, drink some soda.
I still don’t know what do drink after the meal. I drink water but it is just not doing the trick.
I buy only two bottles at the time. So if I want more I have to go to the store. Then I feel too lazy to do that. Tricks, tricks.
Don’t worry, you will survive “getting healthy” treatment and you will feel much better.
Hmm I was just thinking that. That I will have to help you more, but what is wrong with that.
Don’t be sad. Just think how much money you will save on soda. A small fortune.
Hey, keep your head high and repeat after me “I can do it, I can do it”.
